One of the most frequent questions we receive from tourists is: “Can I enter Turkmenistan in my own car or motorcycle?”. The short answer is yes, it is possible. However, this process requires careful preparation, the processing of special documents, and compliance with strict rules.
In this article, we will tell you in detail everything an auto-tourist needs to know before crossing the border of Turkmenistan.
🚨 Important rule: Left-hand drive and right-hand drive cars
This is the most important technical restriction that every auto-tourist must know:
- In Turkmenistan, you are allowed to drive independently only in left-hand drive cars (the standard for Europe, the USA, and CIS countries).
- If you have a right-hand drive car (for example, from the UK, Australia, or Japan), driving on public roads is strictly prohibited. The only way to cross the country with a right-hand drive vehicle is to hire a tow truck (car carrier) at the border and have the car transported through the country in transit.
🛂 Visa and Letter of Invitation (LOI)
You will need a visa to enter the country. For road travelers (in left-hand drive cars), there are two main options:
- Transit Visa: Allows you to cross the country (for example, from the border with Iran to Uzbekistan) for up to 5 days without a guide.
- Tourist Visa: Allows you to explore the country in detail, but by law, foreign tourists must be accompanied by a licensed local guide.

📄 What vehicle documents are needed at the border?
The border inspection process (for example, at the Farap or Shavat checkpoints) is quite strict but transparent. You will only need the original documents — you do not need to translate them into Turkmen. Required list:
- Your valid international passport with a visa.
- Original driver's license.
- Original vehicle registration certificate (technical passport).
💵 Fees and taxes at the border (Payment in cash only)
When entering in your own vehicle, you will need to pay a number of government fees. Important: all payments at the border are accepted exclusively in cash in US dollars (banknotes must be in perfect condition). You will have to pay for:
- Vehicle tax (depends on engine capacity).
- Fuel fee (calculated based on your declared route and distance).
- Environmental and sanitary fee for disinfection.
- Mandatory local car insurance.
- Processing of the customs declaration for temporary import.
📍 Route list and GPS
You cannot move around the country completely freely. At the border, the customs service will issue you a special Transport itinerary list. Your path from the point of entry to the point of exit will be clearly written in it. Deviating from this route is strictly prohibited.
🏜️ Nuances for Ashgabat and the Karakum Desert
- The White City: If your route passes through the capital, Ashgabat, keep in mind that the city has a rule favoring the use of predominantly white cars. Dirty cars or dark-colored cars may not be allowed into the city center.
- Off-road vehicles: If you plan to visit the famous Darvaza Gas Crater or the Yangikala Canyons, you will definitely need a four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle, as there are no paved roads there.
