Walk along Jurassic-period fossilized dinosaur footprints, discover sacred pilgrimage caves, and relax by natural sulfur springs. Conclude your epic journey by exploring the 11th-century Dayahatun Caravanserai and crossing the majestic Amu Darya River to depart via the Farap border.

What is included

Letter of Invitation (LoI) for Turkmenistan visa and assistance with mandatory registration of foreign visitors.
Accommodation in standard hotel rooms: twin rooms shared by same-gender guests; double rooms for couples; single rooms arranged when needed (other room categories on request).
Private transport, domestic flights, and train tickets (as specified in your itinerary), along with a professional English-speaking guide for all designated routes.
All expenses of your driver and guide, including fuel, meals, accommodation, meeting you at the border and seeing you off at the border.
Daily breakfasts during the tour.
Dinner and overnight in a yurt at the Darvaza gas crater and at Gozli Ata (if included in your itinerary).

What is not included

Visa and other border fees are not included. The visa can be obtained either at the embassy or at the border.
International flights and any transport to/from Turkmenistan at the start and end of the tour.
Meals are not included in the program (approximately 5–10 USD per meal per person, depending on the location and restaurant).
Personal expenses (e.g. souvenirs, laundry, minibar) and tips for guides/drivers (optional but appreciated).
Drones (not allowed in Turkmenistan).
Entrance, photo fees, and activities at Turkmen Ojagy (if included in your itinerary; lunch, folklore, dress-up, & masterclasses require min. 4 people).

Tour program

Day 1 Shavat Border → Dashoguz → Darvaza Gas Crater

🛂 10:00 (approx.): Meeting in the main hall of the Shavat border terminal on the Turkmen side. During passport control, border guards will contact our team, and our local guide will meet you directly in the hall based on your photo.
🍽️ Stop in Dashoguz: A short transfer to Dashoguz for a traditional lunch. Visit to the local bazaar to experience the culture and purchase necessary supplies and snacks for the desert.
🚙 Desert Journey: Start of the journey towards Darvaza (~300 km, approximately 4–4.5 hours) across the central part of the Karakum Desert. Please note that some sections of the road are uneven, making the ride bumpy — this is a true off-road desert adventure.
🔥 Darvaza Gas Crater ("Shining of Karakum"): Arrival at the spectacular burning gas crater. Watching the sunset in the desert as the fiery glow of the crater begins to intensify.
🍢 Evening and Dinner: Enjoy a traditional open-air barbecue prepared by our team at the yurt camp. The night provides exceptional opportunities for viewing and photography as the burning crater shines brightly under the desert stars.
⛺ Overnight: Accommodation in a traditional Turkmen yurt at the camp near the crater.

Day 2 Darvaza Gas Crater → Ashgabat

Sunrise Experience: Optional pre-dawn visit to the crater edge to experience the surreal morning light and capture the last glowing flames before sunrise over the desert.

Breakfast & Departure: Enjoy a fresh breakfast at the yurt camp, pack up, and begin your southward journey across the Karakum Desert to the capital city, Ashgabat (~270 km, approx. 3.5 hours). Please note that certain sections of the road are rough and uneven, making the drive bumpy, this is a true off-road desert adventure.

Desert Craters Stops: En route, make short stops to explore the unique Water Crater and Mud Crater, witnessing the diverse geological phenomena of the desert.

Lunch: Enjoy a lunch break upon arrival in Ashgabat.

Ashgabat City Tour: After lunch, embark on a guided exploration of Ashgabat. Discover the city's signature white-marble architecture, historic monuments, and cultural sites tailored to your pace.

Overnight: Stay at a hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 3 Ashgabat (Full Day Exploration)

Tailored Full-Day City Tour with Lunch & Dinner: After breakfast at your hotel, continue your tailored exploration of the capital city with your expert guide. Today’s exploration is fully flexible and designed to cover the remaining landmarks, vibrant cultural sites, and unique architectural highlights that you didn't catch yesterday, perfectly matching your personal pace. The day is designed around your comfort, featuring carefully timed breaks for a delicious lunch and a relaxed dinner at local restaurants, where you can sample authentic Turkmen and regional cuisine while reflecting on the city's unique sights.

Day 4 Ashgabat → Ancient Merv → Kerki (Overnight Train)

07:30 AM: Morning departure from Ashgabat. Drive east along the Ashgabat–Mary High-Speed Motorway (Autobahn). Enjoy a smooth, comfortable journey across the changing landscapes (~360 km, approx. 3.5 to 4 hours).

Lunch: Arrive in the Mary region and enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant in Mary or Bayramaly.

Ancient Merv Guided Tour: Visit the spectacular archaeological park of Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Explore the key historical highlights in a streamlined route:

Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: A 12th-century Seljuk masterpiece featuring its legendary double-dome construction.
Greater & Lesser Kyz Kala: The iconic "corrugated" mud-brick desert fortresses (7th–12th centuries).
Askhabs Mausoleums & Ancient Sardoba: Visit the sacred burial sites of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, along with the adjacent medieval public baths and the sophisticated desert water storage system (Sardoba).
Erk Kala & Gyaur Kala: Climb the massive ancient citadels for a panoramic view over the vast archaeological park.
Note: Ancient Merv hosts numerous other hidden ruins; additional minor historic sights within the archaeological park can be flexibly explored upon request, depending on your time and interest.

Flexible Evening & Dinner in Mary: Return to the city in the late afternoon. The rest of the evening is fully flexible and designed entirely around your personal mood. You can choose to explore the main local landmarks and highlights of the city center with your guide, or simply head straight to a premium local restaurant. Unwind in a warm, lively atmosphere with great food, refreshing drinks, and local live music before your journey.

Train Station Transfer & Departure: Transfer to the Mary Railway Station. Board the overnight train to Kerki, departing at 21:25.

Overnight: Stay on the overnight train (comfortable 4-berth compartments).

Day 5 Kerki Arrival → Gaynar Baba Spring & "Goat Massage" → Koytendag

07:00 AM: Arrival in Kerki & Breakfast: Arrive at the Kerki Railway Station by overnight train. Meet your private driver directly at the platform and head to a local café for a warm, traditional breakfast to fuel up.

Overland Expedition to Koyten (~185 km): Begin your scenic drive east toward the rugged Koytendag Mountains. Watch the flat desert plains gradually transition into dramatic foothills.

Nature Stop at Gaynar Baba Sulfur Spring: Make a refreshing stop along the route at the unique Gaynar Baba hot spring. Walk around this naturally warm, bubbling sulfur pool, highly revered by locals for its healing properties.

Cultural Experience - Traditional "Goat Massage" (Optional): If time and local availability permit between our nature stops, experience a highly unusual, authentic local "Goat Massage", a traditional therapeutic practice unique to the region's rural culture.

Arrival & Mountain Guesthouse Settling: Arrive in the scenic mountain village of Koyten in the afternoon. Check into your cozy, traditional guesthouse or basecamp.

Relaxed Evening & Traditional Dinner: Spend the remainder of the day at your leisure, breathing in the fresh mountain air. In the evening, gather for a delicious, home-cooked traditional dinner prepared by your hosts.

Day 6 Koytendag Full-Day Expedition

08:30 AM: Dinosaur Plateau (Hojapil): Climb into the mountains by car to visit a world-famous limestone slope containing over 300 fossilized Jurassic-era dinosaur footprints, the largest collection of its kind on Earth.

Umbar Dere Gorge: Take a scenic walk through a towering, narrow stone canyon to discover a beautiful hidden mountain waterfall.

Scenic Mountain Picnic: Enjoy a fresh, delicious traditional picnic lunch surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, maximizing your time in the wild.

Sacred "Pälwan daş" (Hero's Stone): Stop by a legendary roadside boulder where, according to local tradition, you can test your strength and make a wish.

Kyrk Gyz Cave (Forty Girls): Explore a deeply atmospheric sacred pilgrimage cave, famous for its unique spiritual energy and thousands of wish-cloths hanging from the ceiling.

Evening & Dinner: Return to your guesthouse in the late afternoon to rest. Share your impressions over another delicious, warm home-cooked dinner.

Day 7 Koytendag → Ancient Heritage of Kerki → Turkmenabat

Scenic Mountain Descent: After breakfast, bid farewell to the Koytendag Mountains and drive down toward the historic town of Kerki.

Kerki Historical Heritage: Explore a cluster of the region's greatest medieval monuments:

Astana Baba Complex (11th–12th c.): A sacred multi-domed pilgrimage site famous for its interconnected tombs and "miraculous" spring.
Alamberdar Mausoleum (11th c.): The largest Seljuk-era monument in the area, showcasing masterclass ornamental brickwork.
Idris Baba Madrasah: Pay respects at the historic Islamic school where the legendary Turkmen poet and philosopher Magtymguly Pyragy studied.

Lunch in Kerki: Enjoy a relaxed lunch featuring local regional dishes at a popular local restaurant in Kerki before continuing the journey.

Drive to Turkmenabat: Continue your overland journey north to Turkmenistan’s second-largest city (~230 km from Kerki).

Evening in Turkmenabat: Check into your hotel and enjoy a warm dinner. End the day with an optional night drive through the brightly illuminated, modern avenues of the city.

Day 8 Turkmenabat → Dayahatun → Farap Border

07:00 AM: Depart north along the Amu Darya valley toward the remote Dayahatun Caravanserai (~170 km, approx. 3.5 hours). Have breakfast en route. Please note that the final sections of this route consist of rough, unpaved desert roads.

Dayahatun Exploration & Return Journey: Arrive at Dayahatun to explore the magnificent 11th-century Seljuk ruins, a true architectural masterpiece of the Silk Road hidden in the desert. After the tour, begin the return drive to Turkmenabat (~3.5 hours), passing through authentic local villages and scenic agricultural fields.

Late Lunch & Turkmenabat City Exploration: Arrive back in Turkmenabat around 14:30 for a well-deserved, hearty lunch at a local restaurant. Following lunch, enjoy a focused cultural exploration of the city:

Lebap Regional Museum: Discover the fascinating ethnographic and archaeological collections showcasing the rich heritage of the Amu Darya region.
Amul Fortress: Explore the atmospheric mud-brick ruins of Amul-Gala, an ancient Silk Road stronghold on the city's outskirts.

Amu Darya River Photo Stop: Make a scenic photo stop by the majestic Amu Darya, the largest river in Central Asia, as you cross it on your way toward the border.

Border Transfer: Drive to the Farap Border Checkpoint (~40 km from the city). Arrival at the border terminal. Our professional team will escort and assist you through all Turkmen customs and departure immigration formalities as per official border permit regulations.
