FAQ

Is a visa required to visit the Darvaza Crater from Khiva?
Yes, a Turkmen visa (or an official Letter of Invitation — LOI to obtain a visa at the border) is required to cross the border into Turkmenistan via the Shavat checkpoint. Additionally, please make sure that your visa status in Uzbekistan allows re-entry into the country after the tour concludes.
Where is the overnight accommodation organized during the tour?
The overnight stay takes place in a traditional yurt camp in the Karakum Desert, located near the Darvaza crater. This allows you to enjoy the desert atmosphere, an open-air dinner, and observe the night glow of the "Gates of Hell".
What is included in the tour itinerary and what meals are provided?
The program includes transfers along the route Khiva/Shavat – Dashoguz – Darvaza – Dashoguz – Shavat/Khiva, an overnight stay in a yurt, a barbecue (BBQ) dinner by the crater, and breakfast the next day. It is recommended to bring warm clothes for the night in the desert and comfortable shoes.
How does the border crossing process between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan work?
The tour begins with a transfer from Khiva or Urgench to the "Shavat" border checkpoint. After independently passing through passport and customs control at the border, you will be met by a guide/driver on the Turkmen side in Dashoguz, from where you will depart for the crater. The next day, you will be transported back to the border to return to Uzbekistan.
