Route: Bukhara / Farap Border – Ancient Merv – Mary – Ashgabat – Turkmenabat (Overnight Train) – Farap Border / Bukhara

An action-packed 3-day round-trip journey from Bukhara (Uzbekistan) into Turkmenistan via the Farap border crossing! Begin by crossing the border and traveling through the Karakum Desert to explore the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ancient Merv, including the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum and Kyz Kala fortresses. Continue along the high-speed motorway to Ashgabat for an overnight stay. On day two, enjoy a customized tour of the "White Marble City" before boarding an overnight sleeper train to Turkmenabat. Conclude your adventure on day three with a cultural tour of Turkmenabat, visiting the Gok Bazaar and ancient Amul Fortress, followed by a scenic photo stop at the Amu Darya River and seamless border assistance at Farap for your return to Bukhara.

What is included
  • Letter of Invitation (LoI) for Turkmenistan visa and assistance with mandatory registration of foreign visitors.
  • Accommodation in standard hotel rooms: twin rooms shared by same-gender guests; double rooms for couples; single rooms arranged when needed (other room categories on request).
  • Private transport, domestic flights, and train tickets (as specified in your itinerary), along with a professional English-speaking guide for all designated routes.
  • All expenses of your driver and guide, including fuel, meals, accommodation, meeting you at the border and seeing you off at the border.
  • Daily breakfasts during the tour.
  • Entrance fees and photography permits for museums and attractions visited with your guide.
  • Travel insurance.
  • All local taxes and mandatory service charges for services included in the tour.
  • The tour usually starts and ends at the Turkmenistan side of the border (other pick-up or drop-off points can be arranged on request).
What is not included
  • Visa and other border fees are not included. The visa can be obtained either at the embassy or at the border.
  • International flights and any transport to/from Turkmenistan at the start and end of the tour.
  • Meals are not included in the program (approximately 5–10 USD per meal per person, depending on the location and restaurant).
  • Personal expenses (e.g. souvenirs, laundry, minibar) and tips for guides/drivers (optional but appreciated).
  • Drones (not allowed in Turkmenistan).
  • Entrance, photo fees, and activities at Turkmen Ojagy (if included in your itinerary; lunch, folklore, dress-up, & masterclasses require min. 4 people).

Tour program

Day 1 Farap Border → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat

9:00 AM (Approx.): Meet and greet inside the main hall of the Farap Border Control Terminal on the Turkmen side; as you process your migration and passport check, the border officers will contact our team, and our local guide will enter the hall to meet you directly based on your photo.

Transfer to Ancient Merv: Depart the border terminal and travel southwest through the Karakum Desert region toward the Merv oasis (~250 km, approx. 3.5 to 4 hours).

Lunch: Stop in Mary for a traditional local lunch break. 

Ancient Merv Guided Tour: Explore the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park of Ancient Merv, one of the greatest metropolises along the historical Silk Road:

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: A 12th-century Seljuk masterpiece with its legendary double-dome structure.

  • Greater & Lesser Kyz Kala: Iconic corrugated mud-brick desert fortresses (7th–12th centuries).

  • Askhabs Mausoleums & Ancient Sardoba: Sacred companions' burial sites and the ancient desert water storage system.

  • Erk Kala & Gyaur Kala: Massive ancient citadels offering panoramic views over the archaeological complex.

Note: Additional minor historic sights within the park can be flexibly explored upon request, depending on time.

Highway Drive to Ashgabat: Depart the Mary region along the modern High-Speed Motorway (Autobahn) toward Ashgabat (~360 km, approx. 3.5 to 4 hours). Enjoy scenic views over the desert horizon during the smooth ride.

Evening & Dinner in Ashgabat: Arrive in Ashgabat in the evening and enjoy a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant. 

Overnight: Stay at a hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 2 Ashgabat → Turkmenabat (Overnight Train)

Breakfast & Check-out: Enjoy a fresh breakfast at your hotel in Ashgabat and complete check-out.

Ashgabat City Highlights: Embark on a private, fully customizable tour of Turkmenistan's capital, known as the "White Marble City." Your guide will craft a flexible route blending ancient Silk Road history with grand futuristic landmarks and marble monuments.

Meals & Leisure: The day is designed around your comfort, featuring carefully timed breaks for a delicious traditional lunch and a relaxed dinner at local restaurants, sampling authentic Turkmen cuisine.

Train Station Transfer & Departure: Transfer to the Ashgabat Railway Station. Board the overnight train to Turkmenabat, departing at 19:50.

Overnight: Stay on the overnight train (comfortable 4-berth compartments).

Day 3 Turkmenabat → Farap border

09:30 AM: Arrival & Meet-up: Arrive at Turkmenabat Railway Station via the overnight sleeper train from Ashgabat. Meet your private driver at the platform  and refresh before the day's program.

Flexible Turkmenabat City Tour: Enjoy a tailored morning orientation drive and cultural exploration of Turkmenabat, structured flexibly around your preferences: 

  • Gok Bazaar: Experience the lively atmosphere of an authentic oriental market, explore stalls filled with regional spices and dried fruits.

  • Amul Fortress Ruins: Walk among the historic earthwork ramparts of Amul-Gala, an ancient Silk Road trade citadel that once linked Merv, Bukhara, and Khorezm.

  • City Center Exploration: Discover the modern avenues, central squares, and architectural landmarks of eastern Turkmenistan's main urban center.

Lunch: Enjoy a relaxed lunch break at a local restaurant, sampling regional specialties.
