An immersive 2-day Silk Road round-trip journey from Bukhara (Uzbekistan) into eastern Turkmenistan via the Farap border! Cross the border and venture into the Karakum Desert to discover the medieval 11th–12th century Seljuk architecture of the Dayahatyn Caravanserai. Continue to Turkmenabat to board an overnight train to Mary, enjoying a traditional packed dinner on board. On day two, explore the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ancient Merv—including the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar and Kyz Kala fortresses—and immerse yourself in local culture at the Turkmen Ojagy ethnographic complex. Conclude your tour with a high-speed motorway return drive and seamless assistance at the Farap border for your return to Bukhara.

  • Letter of Invitation (LoI) for Turkmenistan visa and assistance with mandatory registration of foreign visitors.
  • Accommodation in standard hotel rooms: twin rooms shared by same-gender guests; double rooms for couples; single rooms arranged when needed (other room categories on request).
  • Private transport, domestic flights, and train tickets (as specified in your itinerary), along with a professional English-speaking guide for all designated routes.
  • All expenses of your driver and guide, including fuel, meals, accommodation, meeting you at the border and seeing you off at the border.
  • Daily breakfasts during the tour.
  • Entrance fees and photography permits for museums and attractions visited with your guide.
  • Travel insurance.
  • All local taxes and mandatory service charges for services included in the tour.
  • The tour usually starts and ends at the Turkmenistan side of the border (other pick-up or drop-off points can be arranged on request).
What is not included
  • Visa and other border fees are not included. The visa can be obtained either at the embassy or at the border.
  • International flights and any transport to/from Turkmenistan at the start and end of the tour.
  • Meals are not included in the program (approximately 5–10 USD per meal per person, depending on the location and restaurant).
  • Personal expenses (e.g. souvenirs, laundry, minibar) and tips for guides/drivers (optional but appreciated).
  • Drones (not allowed in Turkmenistan).
  • Entrance, photo fees, and activities at Turkmen Ojagy (if included in your itinerary; lunch, folklore, dress-up, & masterclasses require min. 4 people).

Tour program

Day 1 Farap Border → Dayahatyn → Turkmenabat → Mary (Overnight train)

9:00 AM (Approx.): Meet and greet inside the main hall of the Farap Border Control Terminal on the Turkmen side; as you process your migration and passport check, the border officers will contact our team, and our local guide will enter the hall to meet you directly based on your photo.

Expedition to Dayahatyn Caravanserai: Depart north across the Karakum Desert landscapes toward the medieval Dayahatyn Caravanserai (~210 km, approx. 3 hours). Please note that the drive includes uneven asphalt and bumpy off-road desert sections, offering an authentic Silk Road adventure.

En Route Lunch & Guided Exploration: Enjoy a traditional lunch at a roadside restaurant before exploring Dayahatyn. Step back in time to admire its 11th–12th century Seljuk brickwork, grand archways, and preserved courtyard.

Return to Turkmenabat: Scenic return drive back toward Turkmenabat (~170 km, approx. 2.5 hours). 

Turkmenabat Highlights (Time Permitting) & Station Transfer: Enjoy a brief orientation drive past the historic Amul Fortress ruins and Lebap Regional History Museum. Transfer to Turkmenabat Railway Station by 18:15.

Overnight Train to Mary & Onboard Dinner: Board the overnight sleeper train to Mary (18:45 – 00:50). Relax with a cozy traditional packed dinner set served onboard as you travel across eastern Turkmenistan.

Arrival in Mary & Hotel Check-in: Transfer from Mary Railway Station to your hotel for check-in.

Overnight: Stay at a hotel in Mary.

Day 2 Mary → Ancient Merv & Turkmen Ojagy → Farap Border

Breakfast & Check-out: Enjoy a fresh breakfast at your hotel and complete check-out. Meet your guide and driver to begin the day's historical journey 

Ancient Merv Guided Tour: Explore the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park of Ancient Merv, one of the greatest metropolises along the historical Silk Road:

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: A 12th-century Seljuk masterpiece with its legendary double-dome structure.

  • Greater & Lesser Kyz Kala: Iconic corrugated mud-brick desert fortresses (7th–12th centuries).

  • Askhabs Mausoleums & Ancient Sardoba: Sacred companions' burial sites and the ancient desert water storage system.

  • Erk Kala & Gyaur Kala: Massive ancient citadels offering panoramic views over the archaeological complex.

Note: Additional minor historic sights within the park can be flexibly explored upon request, depending on time.

Turkmen Ojagy Ethnographic Experience & Lunch: Visit the nearby Turkmen Ojagy complex for an immersive cultural experience and traditional lunch:

  • Alabay Dogs & Camels: Meet the majestic Turkmen Alabay dogs and take photos with Bactrian camels.

  • National Dress Photo Session: Try on authentic Turkmen telpek hats and silver-adorned robes inside a traditional yurt.

High-Speed Transit to the Border: Depart Bayramaly (~14:00) and head northeast toward the Uzbekistan border via the modern Mary-Turkmenabat High-Speed Motorway (~240 km, approx. 2.5 hours).
